Hill http://spaceelephants.com/?guid=4fdbe5a6997f8a561160a9da90327c06 Rich Mogull recently published some tips at Macworld for securing the data on your iPad.

Because there are currently no known remote attacks against iPads, the biggest security risk is physically losing the device. Thus, the first step is to make sure your tablet’s data is safe in case it’s lost or stolen. For that, I’d suggest a combination of encryption and remote wiping.

iPad Adoption in Business Starts at the Top According to Report http://spaceelephants.com/2011/06/20/ipad-adoption-in-business-starts-at-the-top-according-to-report/ http://spaceelephants.com/2011/06/20/ipad-adoption-in-business-starts-at-the-top-according-to-report/#comments Mon, 20 Jun 2011 15:47:05 +0000 Brian L. Hill http://spaceelephants.com/?guid=1a42368bd3f6c4df5008297159e1903c According to GigaOm's Darrell Etherington, controlled circulation publisher, TradePub.com reports that a majority of enterprise iPad users have a title of "manager" or higher. This report was based upon usage statistics generated by the site's iOS app for viewing trade journals. The report also indicates that these users consume more content on the iPad than on the iPhone version of the app. Other interesting statistics indicate that users of the app were more likely to access content on weekends - apparently the enterprise is filled with workaholics...

In addition to the 71 percent of iPad users (drawn from TradePub’s 30,000-strong installed base) who were at least managers, 48 percent of were at the level of “Director” or above. While TradePub’s audience may skew toward higher-level employees because of the nature of its content (it offers trade magazine and technical support documentation downloads), this does back up previous reports that the iPad is generally seeing a top-down adoption pattern in general.

Google Sync Update for iOS Improves Gmail and Google Calendar http://spaceelephants.com/2011/06/17/google-sync-update-for-ios-improves-gmail-and-google-calendar/ http://spaceelephants.com/2011/06/17/google-sync-update-for-ios-improves-gmail-and-google-calendar/#comments Fri, 17 Jun 2011 15:23:20 +0000 Brian L. Hill http://spaceelephants.com/?guid=be69cb79e19db36a2c4aeb8220f5f1e1 Audrey Waters reports at Read Write Web that Google has updated features in its Google Sync product to Gmail and Google Calendar on iOS devices. There are three main updates:

  1. Search all Gmail messages in the native Mail app for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch - including those not stored locally on the device.
  2. Accept or decline invitations to meetings through iCal.
  3. Send email from verified addresses - the "send mail as" feature that has been in Gmail for years.

To be able to utilize these updates, you will have to set up Google Sync on your iPhone. This is slightly different than simply specifying your Gmail address as your iOS account. Google has full instructions here.

I make extensive use of smart folders (in Apple Mail) and tags (in Gmail) to sort my email into logical groups that I can easily process all at once; it’s an important part of my strategy for processing my inbox faster and dealing with email overload. The key is to use rules and filters that automatically sort my email without any additional intervention from me.

Use an iPhone/iPod Touch To Control A Keynote Presentation on an iPad http://spaceelephants.com/2011/06/02/use-an-iphoneipod-touch-to-control-a-keynote-presentation-on-an-ipad/ http://spaceelephants.com/2011/06/02/use-an-iphoneipod-touch-to-control-a-keynote-presentation-on-an-ipad/#comments Thu, 02 Jun 2011 17:00:52 +0000 Brian L. Hill http://spaceelephants.com/?guid=37dc8e80da394aabb7655e826a995d35 The Apple Blog's Geoffrey Goetz shows how to use an iPhone or iPod Touch to control a Keynote presentation on an iPad. This would be especially useful when connecting the iPad to a large display using the dock connector.

One of the best new features in Apple’s updated iWork suite for iPhone and iPad is the ability to control a Keynote presentation on your iPad (probably ideally connected to a larger screen) using your iPhone. Please note that the following requires both devices to be on the same local Wi-Fi network, rather than working with a device-to-device Bluetooth connection, and that you must also have the Keynote Remote ($0.99) and two iOS devices.

Mac Application Allows Signing PDFs http://spaceelephants.com/2011/05/31/mac-application-allows-signing-pdfs/ http://spaceelephants.com/2011/05/31/mac-application-allows-signing-pdfs/#comments Wed, 01 Jun 2011 04:48:31 +0000 Brian L. Hill http://spaceelephants.com/2011/05/31/mac-application-allows-signing-pdfs/

Samuel Gibbs of The Unofficial Apple Weblog shows the helpful app for Macs that allows one to digitally sign PDF documents without needing the very expensive Adobe Acrobat Pro.

These days almost all forms are distributed online as PDFs. However, when you need to sign one, you normally need to print it and scan it back in for an email, or even worse, use a fax. Luckily, there are apps for that.

PDF Signer allows you to fill out and sign PDF forms. You can enter text in any pre-defined text boxes the form might have, but if the form isn’t that advanced, you can enter text in text boxes of your own creation anywhere on the PDF using the “Add Text” tool.

Electronics Buy-Back Services Reviewed By CNET http://spaceelephants.com/2011/05/31/electronics-buy-back-services-reviewed-by-cnet/ http://spaceelephants.com/2011/05/31/electronics-buy-back-services-reviewed-by-cnet/#comments Tue, 31 May 2011 15:00:07 +0000 Brian L. Hill http://spaceelephants.com/?p=1802 Erica Ogg, from CNET's Crave Blog, recently spent some time selling old gadgets back to some companies that then resell the products. Due to the current rate of innovation in consumer electronics, combined with environmental and economic concerns, the after market for used devices is heating up.

Services like Gazelle.com, Nextworth.com, and eBay Instant Sale do most of the work for you. They evaluate the condition of the item you want to sell and pay you with a check, PayPal deposit, or credit at a retailer based on the resale market value--which each service independently determines. And big box retailers like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Radio Shack have gotten in on the buy-back action too. They will take your old items for store credit toward a new purchase.

We've taken some gadgets that people might plan on upgrading from in the next few months and run them through the various services to figure out who offers the best deal.

Small Business Adoption of “The Cloud” http://spaceelephants.com/2011/05/26/small-business-adoption-of-the-cloud/ http://spaceelephants.com/2011/05/26/small-business-adoption-of-the-cloud/#comments Thu, 26 May 2011 17:56:43 +0000 Brian L. Hill http://spaceelephants.com/?p=1798 Read Write Web's Alex Williams posted a nice infographic showing some of the top cloud-based applications that save small business time and money.

The small business owner is in that phase right now in which they are asking the young store clerk about all this cloud stuff.

It may be surprising but they are also asking about virtualization. Businesses are starting to understand that they can leapfrog into a new competitive world by using virtualization to use multiple operating systems and to keep apps partitioned and protected.

Follow the link to see the infographic.

Is Aperture Coming to the iPad (and iPhone/iPod Touch)? http://spaceelephants.com/2011/05/25/is-aperture-coming-to-the-ipad-and-iphoneipod-touch/ http://spaceelephants.com/2011/05/25/is-aperture-coming-to-the-ipad-and-iphoneipod-touch/#comments Wed, 25 May 2011 20:00:40 +0000 Brian L. Hill http://spaceelephants.com/?p=1794 Patently Apple's Jack Purcher reports that a recent patent filed by Apple lends credence to the idea that Apple's photo management application, Aperture, may make its way to the iPad.

A number of patents have surfaced over the last two years concerning light pens and apps moving to touch screens. While one of the first detailed patents surfaced in 2009 in relation to business forms, we've since seen some serious advances in Apple's pursuit of the Smart-Pen including a huge leap in the field of graphics pens. It's the latter that's interesting in light of Apple's latest patent revelation that Aperture is coming to touch displays including handhelds like the iPad. It may even come to future desktops and laptops that offer touch displays, according to Apple. An advanced graphics pen would be great for fast photo touch-ups and appreciated by photographers using Aperture on-the-go. Who knows, maybe Apple is even gearing this up for future hybrid systems. Time will tell.
